Team helps semiconductor manufacturers extend the life of their wafer fabrication tools

September 22

ARISTA Corporation, a global provider of the computing platform and KPI visualization for production automation in numerous industries, announces the availability of its Longevity Task Force, a group of specialized technical professionals focused on increasing the longevity of wafer fabrication tools to optimize production and increase productivity. Many 150- and 200-mm wafer fabs are using tools that are 20 years old, or more. When originally purchased, the cost of each tool was in the hundreds of thousands of dollars—if not millions. From an earning perspective, the ability to keep this equipment up and running as long as possible can dramatically improve a fabrication plant’s bottom line.

Arista has formed a Longevity Task Force to assist our semiconductor manufacturing customers with the task of extending the lifespan of their fabrication tools—or increasing the capacity of each tool. Many such tools were designed 10 - 20 years ago, or even longer. Given the currently increasing market demands, the ability to maintain those tools ‘up time’ is especially crucial. The current chips shortage situation also creates significant demand for aftermarket rebuilding of these tools.

Maintaining compatibility between older software and new computer hardware is a big challenge. ARISTA’s Longevity Task Force has successfully been providing computer hardware that is compatible with early operating systems such as DOS and Windows XP for the tools that were designed 10 - 20 years ago. This enables customers to either keep building new tools or rebuild the tools that were designed decades ago. The longevity computer hardware ARISTA provides is used in front-end equipment such as Lithography, Wafer Surface Conditioning, and Deposition—as well as back-end equipment, including Assembly and Packaging, Dicing, Bonding, Metrology, and Testing.

Paul Shu, President of ARISTA Corporation, commented on the company’s Longevity Task Force and the benefits it provides to semiconductor manufacturing facilities, “Arista’s Longevity Taskforce team understands targeted upgrades are key to maintaining the useful lifetime of these vitally important fabrication tools, and to increasing the capability for them to run beyond their originally-designed lifespan. The team has devoted considerable time to finding credible replacements parts for aging systems in addition to working with customers to verify the compatibility of replacement parts. The result is increased productivity and return on investment.”
